Tourist Destin still peaks in July. Resident Destin peaks now. The stretch from late September through the end of October is the one window each year when the harbor belongs less to rental-car traffic and more to the people who live within a twenty-minute drive of it. If you've been here more than a season or two, you already know the shape of it: the Seafood Festival, then a month of weigh-ins behind AJ's, then Halloween on the boardwalk.
What's different in 2026 is that both ends of that rhythm have news attached. The Rodeo has a leaderboard change that hasn't been true in more than a decade. And the dining map that residents use on a Tuesday night, not the one printed in a rental-house welcome book, has shifted enough that a few of the reflexive answers to "where should we go" are no longer the right ones.
The Rodeo has an actual story this year
The 78th Annual Destin Fishing Rodeo runs October 1 through October 31, with weigh-ins every day from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. behind AJ's Seafood & Oyster Bar. That much is the same as it's been since 1948.
The real 2026 headline is that Red Snapper is returning to the Rodeo leaderboard for the first time since 2013, which is a major development for local anglers. To keep the competition fair against federal and state season rules, the Rodeo split it into separate divisions. Federal for-hire vessels can weigh Red Snapper from October 1 through October 25, while private recreational boats and state guide vessels are limited to Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays throughout the month.
If you fish, that's a scheduling problem worth solving now. If you don't, it changes what you'll see at the scale on a Saturday afternoon. Snapper weigh-ins draw a different crowd than the marlin hoists everyone posts photos of, and the weekend windows are going to be dense.

Bruce Cheves Day is the one non-fishing residents most often miss. The weighmaster has been a fixture at the scale for more than four decades, and the day concludes with the Ringing of the Bell ceremony at 5 p.m., honoring members of the fishing community lost during the year. It's a small, unhurried event on a Thursday. If you've lived here long enough to recognize the names being read, it's worth the walk down.
The Seafood Festival weekend is the one to plan around
The 48th annual Destin Seafood Festival runs Sept. 25–27, 2026, along the Destin Harbor Boardwalk, kicking off the Fishing Rodeo with fresh Gulf seafood, live music, and local vendors; general admission is free, with hours running Friday 4pm–10pm, Saturday 10am–10pm, and Sunday 10am–6pm.
For residents, that opening weekend is also the tightest booking and parking window of the whole fall. If you have out-of-town family flying in for October, the honest advice is either the first weekend or a Tuesday. The mid-October weekdays are the ones locals actually enjoy the harbor on. The Saturday of the Seafood Festival is the one you drive around.
What's actually new to eat this fall
Here's where the map has moved. Early 2026 brought two openings that split cleanly along the line between harbor-facing and resident-facing dining. Understanding which is which saves you from defaulting to HarborWalk for a weeknight when the neighborhood option is better.

Two of these are harbor spots and belong to the visitor script. The other two aren't.
Nonna's Ristorante by Chef Tim Creehan has landed at HarborWalk Village, bringing handmade pasta, pizza, and a menu rooted in Mediterranean comfort food to the harbor's restaurant row; Creehan is well known on the Emerald Coast, and this is the kind of spot you bring out-of-town guests when you want to show them the harbor at its best. One block over, The Edge Seafood Restaurant & Skybar sits directly on the Destin Harbor Boardwalk, with an adults-only rooftop bar above the main seafood restaurant, and weekday Happy Hour on draft beer, house wines, craft cocktails and small plates from 2pm–5pm plus live music seven nights a week.
The two that matter more for residents opened away from the boardwalk. Sandos Beachside arrived at 36 Terra Cotta Way on March 8, 2026; the menu pulls from Gulf seafood and Caribbean coastal flavors, which makes it a genuine Thursday-evening destination for anyone who lives within twenty minutes of the water. A few miles east, Bowled Healthy Food Company opened at 4467A Commons Drive W. The menu is customizable acai bowls, salads, smoothies, and waffles, all made from produce prepped fresh each day; it seats about 20 people, offers free Wi-Fi, and is open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The Destin Log reported that repeat customers showed up three times in a single day during the first weeks of operation — a neighborhood restaurant finding its footing, not a tourist attraction.
The point isn't that the new places are better than the old ones. It's that the number of good weeknight options that don't require crossing the Highway 98 corridor has quietly gone up.
The Highway 98 corridor is still moving
The other piece of news is what's replacing a long-standing 98 tenant. A Nashville-based restaurant, The Stillery, is replacing the former Hooters in Destin, with live music, comfort food, and mason jar cocktails. It will be the first Stillery in Florida.
For context on the site: Hooters, located at 15015 Emerald Coast Parkway, closed the first week of January after nearly three decades; the building is a 6,000-square-foot restaurant with 2,000 square feet of outdoor seating on 2.3 acres. The Destin location will be more like the Nashville store, with live music every day and artists brought in from Nashville. The owner is targeting late fall or year's end for opening.
That's a specific bet: a country-leaning live-music room, seven nights a week, on the busiest commercial stretch of 98. It replaces a national brand that occupied the same corner for close to thirty years. Whether you go or not, it's the kind of change that resets the reference points people use when they describe where things are.
A resident's cheat sheet for the next eight weeks
- If you want the harbor without the crowd, mid-October weekdays are the sweet spot. Weekend afternoons during the Rodeo will be dense.
- If you want to see a big-fish weigh-in on purpose, target Saturday afternoons late in the month. Marlin and tuna tend to come in when the offshore boats return.
- If you're hosting out-of-town family, Nonna's for a nicer dinner, The Edge for lunch with a view, Sandos for the low-key Thursday.
- If you're avoiding all of it, the Grand Boulevard Farmers Market runs every Saturday morning and stays outside the Rodeo footprint entirely.
- If you have kids, October 5 (Wagon Boat Parade) and October 13 (Movie Festival at AJ's) are the two easy family afternoons.
None of this is a reason to move, buy, or sell anything. It's the texture of a place in the season it shows its best face. Fall in Destin has always been the residents' quarter. This year, more of it is actually built for us.
